Add Students to a Course in Progress with the Custom Placement Tool

Learn to set custom placement for students, allowing them to begin work anywhere within the course, and auto excusing them from work to that point. 

Notes: This feature is a StrongMind created LTI that is available to users on Canvas. If your organization doesn't not use a StrongMind provided Canvas Instance, you will need to reach out to your CSM for directions to install the LTU link.

This feature was updated in November 2024 and no allows teachers to excuse students from ALL assignments including view only content. 

How-To Guide:

  • Select the course from your Canvas dashboard.

  • Select Custom Placement from your course navigation.

  • Select +Add.

  • Add a title, select your student(s), and the lesson you would like students to be placed within. Then, scroll down to the bottom of the page and select the Apply button.

  • Review your choices. Once a student is placed, it cannot be undone. 
  • When you are ready to run Custom Placement, scroll down to the bottom of the page and select Start.

  • You will see the progress reflected in the bar.

  • Once complete you will be notified of successful placement.

  • Students should now see a check for all assignments preceding the Custom Placement setting.
